I acquire this Springfield awhile back and it came out of as Special Service Grade as the serial number is in th 6,08X, XXX range and would be in the 1956 year. It has the a CMP stock and a Springfield Barrel dated: 9 - 54' When I first obtained it, I did not notice these markings on the barrel unto recently when I broke it down for complete cleaning and greasing. On the top of the barrel it is stamped ' AF PG ' this mark also appears on the lower left portion of the barrel as well I tried to photograph this mark the best I could with the type of camera I have it didn't quite come out so well.
I have never seen this mark until now and was wondering if anyone out there might know what these marks stand for or any information on it would be greatly appreciated Thanks. The AFPG on your barrel stands for AIR FORCE PREMIUM GRADE. These were match rifles built at Lackland AFB. You absolutely scored, even if only the barrel is AFPG. We'll need more pics or info to determine if the rifle is an Air Force match rifle. These are the best of the best and super-duper rare.
IIRC most of them were eventually made into drill rifles. Is it 7.62 or 30-06? Is the barrel also marked NM?
Any other NM stamped parts? Can you get us a good picture of the rear sight base and windage knob?

Any other NM stamped parts? Can you get us a good picture of the rear sight base and windage knob? Awesome rifle! Thanks for the information, in finding bits and pieces of info on these marks, I recently found the the Rear Sight has the windage hole and that its the 1/2 moa adjustment. But does not have the NM aperture, only the regular style. I have closely examined it and can not find any NM markings.
Hra Garand Serial Numbers
The barrel is a SA 9-54 dated and the underneath of the barrel where the Op rod travels is all polished and the chamber is in the white as well. I am sure its a 30-06 as the bolt is not etched 7.62 as I've seen around. The stock is a new stock. I would venture to say that the barrel and receiver are original as possible with the rear sight with the exception that it doesn't have the NM aperture. I am still looking the internals offer to see if I find anymore interesting marks. I hope it will turn out to be a nice shooter once I get a chance to range test it.
The SAI M1s in the 7 mil. Range aren't bad rifles, they just aren't a real USGI rifle. I really like SAI, Inc. M1As as they aren't perpetuated as a REAL USGI M14, however, I think a LOT of folks got caught up in the marketing and thought that a 7 mil. M1 from SAI was actually a REAL M1, not saying SAI marketed them as a real M1, but folks just didn't do their homework and now think they are worth more that what they are. The CMP has basically flooded the mkt. With real M1s and those that have the SAI receivered ones are not gonna realize their investment, just saying.

Early '80's it's all there was once you got your DCM Garand. SAI M1's have come in several iterations from different mfrs of receivers. Later and early aren't the same thing.
I have a 6.08 million SA. I have seen 6.08 and 6.09 million SA Garands. I think I have read of 6.01million SAs.
I have recently read of 6.1 million SA Garands. Copa de casa grande. I have never seen or read of a 6.02, 6.03, 6.04, 6.05, 6.06, or 6.07 million.
Were those serial numbers not used? Were these blocks of serial number produced and never made it into the civilian market due to the selective destruction of this block of serial numbers? I have talked to a few Garand gurus that seem to confirm the absence of circulating Garands in the 6.02 through 6.07 million serial number range. Anyone ever heard an explanation for this observance? Thanks for any ideas. I have a 6.08 million SA.

Mike in NC Mike, To date, nothing physically has appeared from 6,002,000 to 6,079,999 except for a small block of of recycled and recovered / renumbered serial numbers in the 6,034,000 range that includes the overage of 400 HRA receivers (6034330 - 6034729). At this time when Springfield Armory was preparing to shut down the M1 production for the, SA was a country club and it's quite evident they didn't know what serial numbers they used or at least had no plans to use them.
It's unlikely those gaps were ever made let alone destroyed. Known SA blocks: X6,000,000 to X6,001,947 ( Journal Spring 2007) 6,080,000 to 6,100,499 appears to be a complete and valid block On occasion, government lists will show the odd serial number listed in the missing blocks but to date with further physical research they have turned out to be other.30 cal. Weapons listed in error (usually M1 carbines).
The same is evident with the block from 5,980,000 to 5,999,999. To date, no valid M1 rifles have appeared here either except the occasional listing error (M1 carbines) until the X6 million rifles appear.
